Since launching Edgware, we’ve always been asked when we’re going to produce a vegan alternative to our cork grease. Well, we’ve been working away behind the scenes, and are proud to have launched our new formula last week!
We are over the moon with how it’s turned out, and believe it to be just as good as (and we’ve been told by some that it’s even better than) our current cork grease!
Vegan or Vegetarian?
Our new formula replaces the beeswax in our original cork grease with a vegan alternative wax. We’ve spent quite a lot of time adjusting the quantities, in order to produce an alternative that works just as well.
Whether beeswax is vegan or not it a little bit of a grey area,. To be on the safe side, we like to refer to our original cork grease as vegetarian, and our new cork grease as vegan. “A vegetarian cork grease?!” we hear you cry, “What on earth is a non-vegetarian cork grease made from then?!”. It’s a completely fair question, and one with a relatively complicated answer. Many cork greases on the market use an ingredient called lanolin. We don’t use lanolin but it is a greasy emulsifying by-product of the wool industry. When extracted from the wool of sheep that have been bred for the meat industry, it is not considered as vegetarian. On the other hand, there are grounds to argue that using a by-product of the slaughter or wool industry is resourceful. Whatever your views, we are proud to provide alternatives to musicians across the world.

Did you know that you get 10 grams of product in our tubes. This is over twice the amount in industry-standard cork grease tubes! This, along with being petroleum free, will make it last lots longer.
Our team actually use our greases as a lip balm in the office. There’s no need to warn young woodwind players not to put their cork grease anywhere near their mouths anymore!
